Q:  What kind of wax do you use?
A:
   At Makin’ Perfect Scents we strive for excellence, and wax plays a big part in our candles.  We currently use a custom blend of paraffin wax that holds an above average amount of fragrance oil, leaving you with a highly-scented candle.  If normal candle maintenance is done, you will have an even burn throughout the entire candle.
 

Q:  Why do I occasionally see soot coming from my candle?
A:   Check the wick length.  If the wick is longer than one-quarter of an inch, it’s time to trim.  Do not attempt to trim the wick while the candle is lit.  Extinguish the flame, trim the wick and relight.  It is best to check and/or trim the wick to one-quarter of an inch every time before you light your candle.  It is also important to keep your candles away from any drafts.  Drafts can cause the flame to burn hotter, thus causing soot to appear. 
 

Q:  How do I determine how long I should allow my candle to burn for the very first time?
A:
  Most caution labels suggest burning for 2-3 hours.  To calculate how long you should have your candle burning, check the diameter of your jar.  For each inch, allow an hour of burning.  If your candle is 3 inches in diameter, allow 3 hours and so on.  If you notice your melting pool is not all the way across your jar, do not extinguish until it has reached each end of the jar.  If you happen to blow it out too soon, it may affect your candle during your next lighting and you may not have an even burn throughout the entire jar, as your candle has a “memory”. 
 

Q:  Why does my wick have this large black "glob" on it”?
A:   “Mushrooming” is carbon build up and is normal for highly scented candles.  We use self-trimming 100% cotton wicks that help reduce the mushroom and soot effect, however, long burn-times can easily create a mushroom in any candle, especially if the wick isn't kept trimmed to one-quarter of an inch.
